Where can I find funding for an MSW degree?
I got into the MSW program at USC and I want to do it–it’s a great school and a top 10 program, but they told me that very little in the way of scholarships exists for their students, and because I’m not independently wealthy, the $84,000 in tuition for that program is cost prohibitive. I’ve done online searches and seen the random scholarships out there from foundations, but I’ve been told by several people that getting an MSW degree funded is very difficult. I could take out loans, but $84,000 in debt, plus interest over the years, plus the cost of living in LA for the two years I’m in the program would make my life very difficult especially given that as a practicing social worker I would probably never make a lot of money. Does anyone know of any sources of grants and scholarships for MSW training that I wouldn’t find on one of the regular university financial aid sites?
Once you get your bachelors degree, the scholarships and loans are limited. You will have your best bet by going directly to your school and asking… which it sounds like you have already done. When that doesn’t pan out, your only other options are Stafford loans. Grad students can borrow up to 20,500 a year (minus your EFC). This is the only way… if you aren’t willing to borrow, then you should find a cheaper school… one you don’t need to borrow so much money for.
Graduated with 22,000K in student loan debt for my grad and undergrad combined (all 6 years). Sounds like you need to find a cheaper school or find a cheaper way to live while going to school.
